In 1978, Internal Revenue Service agents raided Studio 54. They found cash hidden in garbage bags and confiscated drugs.
The owners, Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager, pleaded guilty to tax evasion and went to prison after a sendoff by Diana Ross and Liza Minnelli. Mr. Rubell died in 1989; President Barack Obama pardoned Mr. Schrager in 2017.
The Studio 54 space, vacant for several years, was turned into a theater in 1998.
